So you want to be a businessman? Well, you can! However, just like any other profession, it takes lots of time, effort, sacrifices and hard work to be called a successful entrepreneur. If you want to become one, then read on as I tell you the top 3 daily habits of a successful business owner
Habit #1: Plan tomorrow today
As what Benjamin Franklin said, “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” This is quite a challenge especially if you’re used to the comfort of procrastination. You do know that achieving something worthwhile means you have to take action and that will not happen if you keep waiting for another day to do what you should have done now.
If you’ll only practice the commitment of doing something today instead of tomorrow, things wouldn’t be so hard. One strategy that you can use is the 15-minute rule. How does this work? Well, what you would have to do is set your timer for 15 minutes and do that one thing that you’ve always put off again and again. That is strictly for 15 minutes only – no more, no less. You only need even just a tiny bit of commitment for you to succeed in this, which can lead you to create a momentum somehow as you take some action. And who knows, you might just keep going until you reach your goals!
Another thing you can do is plan your activities, like making a schedule for each day. For some, this may already seem daunting, but not with the help of a good planning app! Such apps make things a whole lot easier, helping you take care of your tasks and deadlines.
One good example is Feedcamp. Now, this app, it is in the center of it all – wedding plans, leading a work project, organizing a camping trip – name it! You can work either at the office or from home. And the best part? Its core features are absolutely free!
Habit #2: Check all the indicators of the “state of the nation”
Simply put, you need to check everything that is going on in your business. And one way to do this is creating a dashboard that automates as much of the process as possible. By having a dashboard, you gain like a panoramic view of everything that’s happening in your business all the time.
To give you an idea of how great a dashboard is, think of it as your personal assistant or secretary. It can show you the exact results of your last email blast to your customers, of how many people opened your email, and even the sales you got from it. All these should appear automatically on your dashboard. Although you can’t get any coffee from your dashboard, well at least you don’t need to spend money on compensation since there are dashboards you can download for free. Really, your dashboard is your best friend.
Moreover, checking even the smallest areas in your business everyday enables you to see both the good and bad trends in the making. With a dashboard, you can easily do this through key metrics and success indicators. As what GoDaddy founder Bob Parson said, “Measure everything of significance. Anything that is measured and watched, improves.” Some of the best dashboards normally show a green arrow facing up to let you know that you are doing well, while a red arrow facing down means otherwise. Intuitively, seeing red arrows makes you want to change them to green, which ends up in increased sales and profits.
Habit #3: Learn something new
As an entrepreneur, you need to be creative and be able to think outside the box to go beyond limits that exist. You must be curious enough to always ask questions for you to discover the unknown and unlock new information. The market is ever-evolving, which means there is always more to learn. Besides, being a successful business person means that you recognize the fact that you don’t know everything and that you are passionate about expanding your knowledge. After all, knowledge is power, especially if it’s about your competitors or the market.
And again, just like the first habit mentioned above, learning doesn’t have to be a one-time, big-time thing. As they say, the best way to eat the elephant is one bite at a time. So do just that! Absorb small pieces of information every day, watch educational videos about entrepreneurship. The brain is a muscle – challenge it, exercise it, and most importantly, use it!
There are other daily habits that make a successful business owner. But knowing all of them is not enough; you have to do them! Take action! Habits do not become habits overnight. Oh yes, you have to do them repeatedly until they feel natural. Ask yourself how badly you want to succeed and surely the motivation to do these habits will reveal itself.
